Heriot-Watt University is delighted to announce the launch of the Tan Sri Yeoh Tiong Lay Global Scholarship Programme in honour of the late Malaysian businessman and noble philanthropist - Yang Berbahagia Tan Sri Dato' Seri Yeoh Tiong Lay.

The £1 million (RM 5.5 million) legacy fund will enable Malaysian students to access higher education by contributing to the cost of tuition fees for their undergraduate studies.

Launched in tribute to Tan Sri's extraordinary life and success, the legacy honours his belief in the importance of education and how it transforms lives.

Tan Sri Dato' Seri Yeoh Tiong Lay completed his own secondary school education at Hin Hua High School in Klang, Malaysia.

With no opportunity to attend university, he worked successfully to build his business to ensure all his children and grandchildren could attend university.

Tan Sri Dato' Seri Yeoh was granted an honorary doctorate in Engineering in 1988 by Heriot-Watt University at a time when the Malaysian campus was yet to be established.

My father's dedication to creating ladders of opportunities for children through education was legendary, as was his untiring generosity with his time, compassion and resources

said Dato' Victor Yeoh Seok Kian, his son and proud alumnus of Heriot-Watt University.

The scholarships will be used to educate deserving individuals who would otherwise be denied opportunities to pursue higher education.

The recipients of the scholarship will help transform and build this nation and sustain the future of Malaysia.

His son, Dato' Victor Yeoh,  also received an honorary doctorate from Heriot-Watt University Malaysia in 2017 for his many contributions in the field of construction, as well as his dedication in supporting educational development.

Dato' Victor Yeoh chose to gift this to Heriot-Watt University Malaysia to contribute to the success of the Malaysia campus.

Finding his own experience as a student in Heriot-Watt's UK campus to be life-changing, he wanted to give a similar opportunity to aspiring Malaysian students.

Professor Richard A. Williams, Principal and Vice Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University said: “The 100 per cent and 50 per cent scholarship awards will also enable recipients to have the opportunity to travel to study in the UK in their second year.”

Studying abroad can only help shape one's perspective and outlook in life. Aside from providing assistance for those who would not usually be able to attend university in the UK, we are also enabling recipients the chance to study at our UK campus at 50% of the total UK tuition fees.

He adds: “I am looking forward to receiving more Malaysian students at the UK campus as an outcome of this scholarship.”

Besides developing academic excellence, scholars will have the opportunity to achieve their full potential through completing the University's EmPOWER programme. Launched by YB Maszlee Malik, the Malaysian Minister of Education, the EmPOWER programme aims to deliver experiential developmental opportunities that provide a lifelong foundation for building emotional intelligence, resilience and happiness among students at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.

The EmPOWER Programme takes our students on a structured growth journey of leading self, leading teams, leading communities and leading enterprise. By harnessing the students' passions and cultivating a strong sense of purpose, EmPOWER Programme prepares the students of today for the challenges of tomorrow
