The sports centre was home to cheers on Wednesday, 12 February, as staff, alumni, students and parents got involved in a variety of sports with some big teams.

The inaugural event saw matches of a basketball triple-header, a football knockout double-header with Napier, and both Men’s Rugby league and cup action on the indoor pitches.  Netball also made a rare Wednesday afternoon appearance.

The HWU Basketball Club men’s 1’s went head to head with Glasgow but lost 57-73 but there was victory for Men’s 2’s with a win over Abertay 2 of 75-31.  The women’s basketball team were also winners beating Queen Margaret 60-35.

HWU Football Club faced Napier University in a double header that resulted in a loss and a win. HW Men’s 3’s won 3-1 but the Watt Men’s 1’s lost 1-2.

The indoor synthetic pitch played host to HWU Rugby Club, with last year’s ‘Team of the Year’, the “Super 2’s” playing in the cup. HW Men’s 1’s looked to remain the only unbeaten team in their division and did just that with a win over Stirling of 29-21.

Ben Graham, Sports Union President said: “Wednesday afternoons are a protected time from timetabled classes. This makes it the perfect time for students to take part in sport, and coupled with having the best facilities in the country, we want to make sure that the impact that sport has on the student experience at Heriot-Watt is celebrated across the board.

“All of our clubs are run primarily by student-volunteers, and our Sports Union’s Volunteer Pathway is held in high regard across the sector, so we wanted to take the opportunity, who perhaps would otherwise remain unaware of some of the great stories that come from the Sports Union, can experience the buzz of a ‘Watt Wednesday’ first-hand!”
