Two teams consisting of 10 Civil Engineering students from the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS) made the university proud at the “UTAR Structural Earthquake Stability Competition 6.0” which was held on 15 February 2020 at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman Sg. Long Campus.

This annual competition was organised by the UTAR Student Chapters of Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and UTAR Civil Engineering Department. It was also sponsored by NS BlueScope Lysaght Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.

Team Second comprising of Vitricious Vinnleo, Valentina Nicson, Lee Jia Yi, Chua Jia Ern and Lee Mei Sze emerged as the Second Runner Up whereas Team Mulan comprising of Kevin Chong Zhi Liang, Ng Yin Hang, Chan Wei Chew, Yeu Jia Yi and Lim Yee Kwong emerged as the Consolation Prize winner. Supervised by Ir. Chai Voon-Chiet and Dr. Ng Soon Min, both teams managed to complete the model construction earlier than the given time and their structures remained stable throughout all levels of the earthquake simulation, which was conducted using a shaking table.

There were 31 teams from universities and polytechnic institutions all over Malaysia that participated in this competition. The theme for this year was "Seismic Resistance during Construction Phase" which required the participants to design a structural model that could withstand and overcome seismic effects during construction period. This event also aimed to enhance the undergraduates’ engineering knowledge, management skills, creativity and innovation in designing a cost-effective structure to resist seismic loading. This remarkable achievement served as a testament to the increased awareness towards earthquake-resistant design for building structures among our undergraduate students.
