Heriot-Watt rises to top thirty in University rankings

Heriot-Watt has entered the UK’s top thirty highest-ranked universities after rising six places in the 2021 Complete University Guide.

The Guide, published today (Tuesday, June 9), ranks the University in 29th place in the UK and in fifth spot overall for Scotland, ahead of other institutions such as Dundee, Strathclyde and Stirling.

The University delivered improvements in the 10 criteria used by the Complete University Guide to measure a university's performance, which include Student Satisfaction, Research Quality, and Facilities spend.

This resulted in Heriot-Watt being ranked in the top ten in three of our 19 subject areas in the UK and have seen improvements in the rankings for several measures, most notably:

  • Our improved performance in NSS 2019 has brought our Student Satisfaction up 18 places to 92nd from 110th last year
  • Entry Standards up 7 places to 15th from 22nd last year
  • 1st in the UK for Building (up from 3rd last year)

The University has also continued to hold our strong position for Facilities Spend and are ranked 2nd in the UK and top in Scotland.

Heriot-Watt also ranked in the top quartile in the UK for eight subjects (compared to five last year) – Accounting & Finance, Building, Business & Management Studies, Chemistry, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, and Town & Country Planning.

Within Scotland, the University came first in the subject area of Building, second in the subjects of Chemical Engineering and Town & Country Planning and third in the subjects of German, Mathematics, and Mechanical Engineering.
