On 12 February 2020, the Young Entrepreneur Masterclass was organised by the Edinburgh Business School, School of Social Sciences under the Entrepreneurial Development Programme (EDP). The EDP is a year-long programme held each year where activities are put in place to reach out to students who are aspiring entrepreneurs and to develop their entrepreneurial skills.

The masterclass was designed to provide young entrepreneurs with an opportunity to learn from the guest speakers the skills and behaviour necessary to establish and run a company. The students commented that the masterclass was good and that they gained invaluable insight from the speakers. It made them reflect and think about what they could do as students pursuing their business ideas.

The first speaker was Mr Kenneth Lee, Shopee’s Employer Branding Lead. He shared Shopee’s journey in online business and offered some advice for students who wished to step into e-commerce and the challenges in its start-up.  He also offered some online business tools and revealed the dos and don’ts of starting an online business.

The second guest speaker was Ms Kim Lim, CEO and co-founder of PichaEats, a food business rebuilding the lives of refugees in Malaysia.  She shared with students her business journey in a social enterprise, explaining their business model and how one can make money yet make an impact on people’s lives.

The event was also part of the Empower Programme aimed at future-proofing our graduates in order to unleash their potential and prepare them for a highly uncertain world.  This class was related to one of the 6 developmental domains which was Innovation, Creativity & Entrepreneurship.
