Heriot-Watt University is delighted to announce the signing of a new agreement with Golden Blue, the South Korean Whisky producer.

The agreement amounting to almost £170,000 over the next three years was signed with Principal, Professor Richard A. Williams and Golden Blue CEO Kim Dong-Wook separately in their respective countries due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The new agreement follows a successful collaboration with Golden Blue over the past three years and is an important relationship for brewing and distilling and Heriot-Watt University. Golden Blue was formed in 2009 and is now at the forefront of the Korean whisky market with their products being created by blending imported scotch whiskies. They are known for their lower alcohol content and non-traditional blue bottle. The new agreement sees two South Korean students per year funded by Golden Blue undertake their MSc in Brewing and Distilling in Edinburgh. The 2020/21 students are now in Edinburgh and ready to embark on their studies.

Jin-Seong Lee, said: “I saw the announcement of Golden Blue and Heriot-Watt and joined this course. It is an honour to spend time in the country of the land of whisky and I will study hard to positively affect the South Korean alcohol industry”

Dr Calum Holmes from the International Centre for Brewing and Distilling (ICBD) said: “I’d like to thank Golden Blue for the continued support provided to Brewing and Distilling education by the Golden Blue scholarship. The students who benefitted in 2019/20, are both on track to complete their target awards (graduation in Winter 2020) and will hopefully both go on to make successful and long-lasting contributions to industry in their future careers.”

A face-to-face celebration will be re-arranged on campus in 2021 once current restrictions allow.
