Resit exams at an alternative Heriot-Watt campus

On‑campus students may request to sit their August resit examinations at any of the following Heriot‑Watt University campus locations:

  • Edinburgh
  • Scottish Borders
  • Orkney
  • Dubai
  • Malaysia

You can request to take your August resit(s) at a different campus by completing the Examination Campus Change Request Form. There is no charge for taking your August resit examination at another Heriot‑Watt campus.

Resit exams at an external venue (for on-campus students only)

On‑campus students may request to sit their August resit examinations at an alternative location.

While attending a university campus is the preferred option, we recognise that exceptional circumstances may prevent some students from travelling to a campus. In such cases, you may apply to take your August resit exam(s) at a British Council location.

Please check the list of countries where the British Council operates. Once you select a country, you will be able to view the cities that offer the exam‑centre service.

Please note: Students based in the UK, UAE, or Malaysia will normally be expected to travel to one of our campuses.

How much will it cost

There is an administrative fee of £200 per location, which is non refundable unless the university is unable to secure a suitable external venue on your behalf. The administrative fee will be charged in the currency of the invoicing campus: AED, MYR, or GBP. You will also be responsible for paying the British Council directly for all costs associated with hosting your exam.

Here is an example of what you may be charged by the British Council:

  • Location – British Council Hong Kong
  • Monday – Friday 10am – 6pm
  • First Session (no more than 3 hours) = HK$2,170 (approximately £207 GBP)
  • Each additional session on the same day = HK$1,730 (approximately £160 GBP)

Please note that exam fees are non-refundable and non-transferable under any circumstances.

How it works

  1. Submit the completed Resit Exam at an Alternative Location form no later than Tuesday 30 June.
  2. We will review your request to confirm whether you meet the requirements.
  3. If your request is approved, you will receive an email with a link to pay the non-refundable administrative fee (£200 per location). If you have multiple resits in different locations, you must pay the fee for each location during the resit period.
  4. Once payment is received, arrangements will be made for you at your preferred British Council location, based on the information you provided.
  5. You will receive confirmation of your exam date, time, venue address, associated costs, and local contact details.
  6. On the day of your exam, you must report to the British Council venue as instructed and take your resit(s) under Heriot‑Watt examination conditions. Your completed script will be securely scanned and returned to the University for marking.

Payment

  • You must pay the non-refundable administrative fee of £200 per location no later than Monday 6 July. Failure to pay by the deadline will result in your request being cancelled, and you will be expected to take your resit(s) at your own campus.
  • You are responsible for paying the British Council directly for all costs associated with hosting your exam, including room hire, invigilation, and administrative services.

Important considerations

  • It may not always be possible to secure a suitable venue in your preferred location. You are strongly encouraged to provide a second option on your form.
  • The University has no control over the fees charged by the British Council. These costs are your responsibility.
  • Remember there is no additional cost to attend your resit at any Heriot‑Watt University campus other than the current campus reassessment fee.
