Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering

Electrical Engineering is essential in many of the products that impact our everyday lives. From smartphones and household appliances, to robotics and energy production.

The Institute of Sensors, Signals and Systems is a hands-on engineering institute with a strong applied and industrial research emphasis. Our expertise offer a stimulating environment for supervised research leading to the degrees of MSc, MPhil or PhD.

Excellence in Applied Robotics

Robots have the potential to revolutionise the world's economy and society in coming years. There is a need for graduates with the technical skills, industry awareness and people-centred focus to innovate and bring real benefit to society. Our teaching is informed directly by the research and hands-on applications developed by the Edinburgh Centre for Robotics and the National Robotarium. By sharing access to the latest knowledge and hardware in Robotics, we equip graduates with the knowledge and skills to make an impact in sectors including defence, energy, healthcare, assisted living, transport, space, automotive, and manufacturing.

Hands-on Engineering degrees

Demand for electrical, electronic and computer engineers is high. Our strong industry links see our graduates gain employment in a wide range of rewarding careers within companies across Scotland, the UK and the globe.

We develop expertise with an industry focus and provide many opportunities to apply learning in a supportive, hands-on environment. Individual and group practical projects are built into each degree.

Students on our 5 year MEng degree courses will spend six months working in industry with one of our partner organisations.

Sensors, Signals and Systems

Research in the Institute of Sensors, Signals and Systems has impact in several key areas, including Medicine and the Life Sciences, Robotics, Autonomous Systems and Transport, Manufacturing and Quality Control, Medicine and Health, Human-Computer Interaction and Communication and Wireless and Wired Communication Networks.

Studying with us you will have access to our extensive facilities including microfabrication cleanrooms, an anechoic chamber for the measurement of field radiation patterns, low temperature co-fired ceramic manufacturing laboratories, a high voltage laboratory (one of four left in the UK) and a microwave manufacturing and characterisation facility.

National Robotarium

Located on Heriot-Watt University's Edinburgh Campus, the UK's National Robotarium is a world-leading centre for Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, providing innovative solutions to global challenges.

The National Robotarium is a joint venture between Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh. Harnessing our expertise, it creates an environment where pioneering research moves rapidly from laboratory to market, developing skilled visionaries and delivering substantial benefits for society
