Pursuing a MSc in Business Psychology with Human Resource Management was the joint dream of Srinidhi Gourraj Rangappagari and her father. It became a reality but not without its challenges. In the middle of writing her dissertation, Srinidhi experienced the heartbreaking loss of her father. During this incredibly difficult time, Srinidhi found a way to balance her grief with her studies, which initially seemed an impossible feat.

With unwavering support from her mother, her partner, Harsha, and the University, Srinidhi found strength in resilience, developing a sense of belonging in our University community, which made all the difference.

As Srinidhi looks back on her journey, she is deeply grateful to the University for their support during one of the toughest times of her life. Se hopes her story will encourage her fellow students to persevere, no matter the obstacles in their path.

What programme did you study, and why did you choose it?

I studied MSc Business Psychology with Human Resource Management, a tailored course focusing on HR-specific knowledge and insights. It equipped me to understand organisational behaviour and the rationale behind business decisions.

What were the key differences you found between studying/living in India and Scotland?

In Scotland, education is more practical and emphasises self-directed learning. This approach helped me develop critical thinking and independent study skills, which were quite different from my experience in India.

Can you tell us more about the support you received during your time at Heriot-Watt?

The personal tutor system was incredibly supportive, offering guidance whenever I needed it.

Following the loss of my father, my professors and the academic support team showed immense compassion, offering me extensions and guiding me through the process with patience and understanding. The Wellbeing Services provided a safe space to express my feelings and regain focus on my goals.

How has the University aided your professional and personal development?

The University provided a holistic learning experience, blending academic rigor with practical insights. Engaging with diverse classmates and faculty broadened my perspective, while the Career Service team helped refine my resume and prepared me for job applications. The emphasis on independent research and critical analysis boosted my confidence and employability.

What advice do you have for current students?

Pre-reading before classes can make a significant difference in understanding the topics. Stay focused on assignments and make the most of the Career Service’s resources—they can help you fine-tune your CV and prepare for interviews. Most importantly, have fun in Edinburgh! Explore the city’s quaint cafes and immerse yourself in its unique charm.

What are you planning to do after you graduate?

I am now working as an HR professional for a reputable Scottish company, putting my knowledge and skills into practice.
