Heriot-Watt University stands with China in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.
That is the message from Professor Richard A. Williams, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, who today (Tuesday 11 February) pledged his support to students and staff from the country.
Professor Williams, who was recently pictured holding a sign written in Chinese that read ‘Be Strong China’, said: “In difficult times, it is important that our University community stands shoulder-to-shoulder in support of one another.
“We are proud of our international outlook and presence, and I have witnessed how the contribution of Chinese students and staff has benefitted our global community. I have visited China a great many times and I look forward to enjoying the wonderful hospitality and friendship on future trips.”
Professor Williams also highlighted the importance to unite as a single university community.
“All of our students and colleagues are valued members of our global community and I want to offer reassurance that we face the challenges posed by the coronavirus together,” he added.
“We each draw strength from one another and it is important that no one feels isolated or alone.”
The coronavirus originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan and has since spread with infected individuals identified in other countries. The University continues to monitor the situation closely, taking advice from relevant health authorities.
A dedicated coronavirus webpage has been created on the University website that includes frequently asked questions and support service details.
