Periodic reviews
Periodic reviews provide a comprehensive evaluation of our Schools, academic partners, and professional services on a multi-year cycle. These reviews ensure that our programmes, student support, and operations continue to meet University and external expectations, and they provide an opportunity to reflect, share good practice, and plan for future development.
Heriot-Watt University undertakes three main types of periodic review:
- Academic Audits: These reviews assess the overall effectiveness of a School or academic partner in managing the quality and standards of its provision, including governance arrangements and quality assurance processes.
- Academic Reviews: These focus on subject-level provision, exploring curriculum design, learning and teaching, and assessment practice to ensure they align with the University’s academic standards and enhance the student experience.
- Professional Services Reviews: These reviews evaluate how effectively our professional service areas support students and staff, as well as their contribution to the University’s strategic priorities.
Periodic reviews are an important mechanism for identifying strengths, sharing effective practice, and supporting Schools and services in achieving continuous improvement.
